Earth Day Tree Seedlings

Carmel Middle School Green Team Tree Seedling Give Away

Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010

The Green Team offered free tree seedlings for planting:  White oak trees, Red maple trees & Chokeberry shrubs. These trees and shrubs are indigenous to Indiana and are disease resistant and drought tolerant. Detailed planting and care instructions were included with each seedling provided.

Why Plant Trees?

Trees sequester (absorb and store) carbon dioxide, so the more trees we plant, the more carbon in the atmosphere is absorbed and stored by the trees. This is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint.

  • An average tree, when mature, can sequester carbon dioxide at an average rate of 48 pounds (22kg) per year.
  • An average tree can also return enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings.
  • The relatively low cost of tree planting makes it one of the most cost-effective carbon sequestration methods available.
  • Tree planting combats soil erosion.

Some Benefits of Trees

Trees help to clean the air by “catching” airborne pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and small particulates less than 10 microns in size.

Trees reduce topsoil erosion, prevent harmful land pollutants contained in the soil from getting into our waterways, slow down water run-off, and ensure that our groundwater supplies are continually being replenished.

For every 5% of tree cover added to a community, storm water runoff is reduced by approximately 2%.

Homeowners that properly place trees in their landscape can realize savings up to 58% on daytime air conditioning and as high as 65% for mobile homes.
