Students from Prairie Trace Elementary wanted to promote the numerous environmental benefits of planting trees. To do this, they developed a project to educate their classmates and provide native Indiana tree seedlings to every student at their school.
In conjunction with applying for a Carmel Green Teen grant, this Prairie Trace Elementary School 5th grader submitted a video to the Scotties Trees Rock! contest to obtain trees for her school. The video was chosen one of the top ten in the nation, and the school received $1000 towards the purchase of new trees. See the video by clicking the photo above.
It took a lot of time and effort, but the students protected the seedlings from drying out by wrapping each in newspaper, wetting the newspaper, and placed in plastic bags.
Over the course of three days, they visited each classroom at Prairie Trace Elementary and educated the students and gave each a tree seedling.
Here is the basic information on how to plant a tree seedling. For more information visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The students presented educational information to each classroom, providing specific information based on the tree seedlings provided.
The 700 seedlings included 100 of each: Swamp White Oak, Shingle Oak, Bur Oak, Black Oak, Black Walnut, Norway Spruce, and Swamp Chestnut. They obtained the seedlings from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources tree seedling nursery for a reduced cost.
The students displayed additional planting information in the classrooms.
With the trees planted via the $1000 Scotties Trees Rock award and the 700 tree seedlings and educational information provided to their classmates, these students have really made a positive environmental impact in their school community.
